Citronella, rosemary, and lemongrass do not kill mosquitos; rather they repel them and other pests, reducing the number of mosquitos that landing nearby. Mosquito incense sticks, candles, or tiki torches contain oils that are released as a smoke, which confuses mosquitoes and hinders their ability to smell the carbon dioxide and lactic acids that attract them to you.

How to light an incense stick:

Step 1: For best results, light sticks outside 10 minutes prior to use.

Step 2: Hold stick down at an angle into flame. Light the end and allow to burn for 20 seconds then blow out.

Step 3: Place stick in outdoor area at ground level, e.g. in a flowerpot filled with sand.

Step 4: The incense will smolder and disperse, minimizing exposure to mosquitoes.

For maximum results, use four or five incense sticks spaced 12-15 feet apart to create a perimeter around your patio or deck.
