It's unfortunate that many of the 'do it yourself' electric dog fence kits include a cheap, thin 20 gauge PVC coated underground dog fence wire, but that is how manufacturers keep the initial cost low. Unfortunately, the customer doesn't realize that they could be out digging up and replacing this wire after a year or two, when it degrades to the point of failure.
Odd as it is, the American Wire Gauge (AWG) measurements are backward, in that -The higher the gauge, the thinner the wire. IE: 20 gauge wire is very much thinner than 14 gauge wire.
