She explains to the impassive customs officials at the airport that her fianc will be meeting her shortly, but he seems to have made other plans. And so they find themselves in the desolate seaside town of Stonehaven, whose crumbling high-rise hotels and shuttered amusements have been converted into a 'designated holding area' for illegal immigrants. The thoughtful stylishness of Pawlikowski's direction doesn't cheapen or aestheticize Tanya's plight but rather extends to her the dignity and compassion that only art can confer.
