Spectacular is a Nickelodeon original movie that features current music and a nice message about making good choices and working hard to achieve success. It's not easy to make it in the music business and young rock star wannabe Nikko Alexander (Nolan Gerard Funk) faces some tough choices when his band members throw him out of his own band and the most powerful record producer in town informs him that he needs $5000 to cut a demo to have the slightest chance of breaking into the music business. Show Choir singer and dancer Courtney (Tammin Sursok) needs a new male lead for her group "Spectacular," but she and Nikko couldn't be further apart in their styles, work ethics, or approaches to performance. Desperation drives Nikko to join Spectacular in hopes of colleting a share of some potential prize money, but conflict between Nikko and Courtney is constant. Adding to the unease is a standing rivalry between show choirs Ta-Da and Spectacular that's growing increasingly more intense thanks to the defection of some Spectacular members to the Ta-Da team. Nikko's competitive spirit leads him on a mission to update Spectacular's moves to prove that show choirs can be cool too, but his efforts only further enrage Courtney. Teen angst and romance add to the turmoil as do lingering hard feelings between Nikko and his former band members. Bonus features are generally brief and uninspiring and feature interview and backstage footage, two music videos ("Everything Can Change" and "For the First Time") with optional karaoke tracks, downloadable ringtone, and a dance tutorial. While Spectacular has some high caliber rock tunes from the musical team Matthew Gerrard and Robbie Nevil of High School Musical 1-3 fame, the film's story and characters aren't nearly as captivating as High School Musical or even Camp Rock. Perhaps it's just the whole show-choir concept with its highly stylized choreography and almost old-fashioned feel that leaves viewers with a vague and uneasy sense of strangeness.
