Soul Food comes to a satisfying conclusion with surefooted confidence. This series' mix of sex, drama, and social commentary is in full bloom in this final season: Teri (Nicole Ari Parker), reeling from her breakup with Damon (Boris Kodjoe), has a serious of troubled liaisons; Bird (Malinda Williams) and Lem (Darrin Dewitt Henson) grapple with infidelity and the lingering effects of Lem's criminal past; Maxine (Vanessa Williams) and Kenny (Rockmond Dunbar) must work through more subtle conflicts in their marriage, while Maxine frets about the girls Ahmad (Aaron Meeks) chooses to date. The show skillfully blends serious plotlines with comic bits, juxtaposing (for example) a thoughtful discussion about nuances of skin color within the African-American community with a farcical bit about an X-rated film being shot in Kenny's garage. In fact, the writing, directing, and acting have never been smoother; even more melodramatic plot turns (for example, Bird gets kidnapped by a crime boss and Lem has to rescue her) somehow manage to stay just grounded enough to get by, while the vast majority of the season is solid and compelling. Marriage, dating, and family strife have always been Soul Food's bread and butter, and this season continues to be a remarkably genuine portrait of human relationships. The show resists making its characters perfect role models; as a result, Maxine and Kenny's marriage becomes admirable for both how they fight and how they function. As the show navigates its final episodes, the pitch-perfect acting demonstrates what a true ensemble this cast has become. Uplifting without being cloying, sexy without being cheap, political without being preachy, the final season of Soul Food is thoroughly enjoyable. --Bret Fetzer
